MAUCK NAMED WEST VIRGINIA WRESTLING MAN OF THE YEAR
by Bill Welker

May 5, 2013

Legendary wrestling tournament director Ron Mauck has been selected by Wrestling USA Magazine as the 2013 West Virginia Wrestling Man of the Year.

He joins two other upper Ohio Valley mat personalities who were past recipients of the award - Dr. Vince Monseau (1991 & 1994) and Dr. Bill Welker (2001).

Ron Mauck was the tournament director of the OVAC Wrestling Championships, the largest conference mat sport event in the country, from 1979 to 2010. This highly-regarded competition was renamed the Ron Mauck OVAC Wrestling Tournament in 2006 because of his total devotion to Valley matmen. Although he has retired as the OVAC tournament director, Ron Mauck is still heavily involved with wrestling endeavors as a member of many area mat sport committees.

Ron Mauck was also the tournament director for five West Virginia State Wrestling Championships (1979-82-83-86-87) at the former Wheeling Civic Center.

Over the years, Ron Mauck has received many wrestling and educational accolades. He was named the West Virginia Wrestling Coaches Man of the Year (1987), received recognition awards from the Upper Ohio Valley Dapper Dan Club (1985 and 1997), and was the West Virginia Athletic Director of the Year (1995). He received the prestigious 1986 OVAC Mr. Mat award. Mauck was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (West Virginia Chapter) and OVAC Hall of Fame in 2006. For his many contributions to community activities, Ron Mauck has twice been selected the Warwood Lions' Club Citizen of the Year.

A 1958 graduate of Bridgeport High School, Ron Mauck and his wife Mary Lou reside in Clearview.
