WVU & Open Tournaments
I have read the schedule for WVU.
Outside of this schedule, what are the open tournaments on the radar for the redshirts, non-varsity or perhaps select varsity to compete in?
I know back when Noah Adams was a redshirt freshman, he and other WVU wrestlers competed in several open tournaments. Matter of fact, Noah got in more matches than any other wrestler on WVU's team that season (including varsity wrestlers). Since that season, it appears WVU has either not had much participation in open tournaments or the activity has been kept top secret.
What is the open tournament plan for 2021-2022? I would think these tournaments would be good prep for the 2022-2023 season.
Upon review of Wisconsin's wrestling schedule, they have ELEVEN open tournaments listed on their schedule. ELEVEN!!!!!!!
Iron sharpens iron.
Brillo pads eventually clean off rust.

Re: WVU & Open Tournaments
Good for Wisconsin. I believe this is the first time I've seen a school list all of the potential Open Tournaments they will have guys attend on their main schedule page.
We'll begin the season at the Clarion Open with the majority of the team there. We have a lot of Open tournaments on our radar right now, but we haven't made decisions on who will redshirt yet. So, as the season progresses we'll make decisions on who goes to what Open tournaments and when.
You're correct that these are great for development and I can assure you that our guys who are not in the starting lineup will be at plenty of Opens. I will keep everyone in the loop with what's going on, how to watch, results, etc as it becomes clearer. We are lucky as their are plenty of Opens within close driving distance of us.
Again, if you have any questions don't hesitate to reach out. My email is kyle.bratke@mail.wvu.edu and office phone is 304-293-9844.

Thank you for your feedback.
How about sharing the list of potential open tournaments now? We will understand that this list is NOT a finalized list of WVU's participation plan.
However, us fans would like to know what is possible. Where the open tournaments will be and on what dates.
Is this possible?

Re: WVU & Open Tournaments
I hope I am not revealing a big secret but it appears that our beloved Mountaineers are sending 4 athletes to the Intercollegiate Open in Tiffin Ohio this weekend. I agree with the idea. It is better to get multiple matches than sit the bench. Communication seems to be a struggle. It would be a shame if someone went to Morgantown expecting to see their favorite wrestler only to find out he’s at a complexly different tournament.

Re: WVU & Open Tournaments
We actually will have a decent sized contingent going to the Ohio Intercollegiate Open on Sunday in Tiffin, Ohio. Below are the list of wrestlers who will be wrestling there on Sunday:
125 - Jace Schafer
133 - Michael Dolan
133 - Jordan Titus
141 - Blake Boyers
149 - Walker Heard
149 - Trey Johnson
149 - Brayden Roberts
165 - Jack Blumer
174 - Scott Joll
197 - Nate Wickersham
285 - Tristan Kemp
There could be a few more as well. Guys are making last minute decisions. I don't believe the event is being streamed anywhere, but brackets will be on TrackWrestling. Hope this helps Robert! I'll report back with results as well when the tournament is complete.

Kyle, I am rooting for you up there. However, I asked on October 21st what open tournaments were on the potential list for Mountaineers. You provided a lengthy list the next day.
I am now following up to then learn WVU is sending a team to a whole different tournament this weekend. The Tiffin, Ohio tournament wasn't listed for this weekend.
1. It is great that the wrestlers are wrestling.
2. It is hard to be a fan when you have to ask where the events are going to be and then the plan changes and again, we have to ask.
Good luck.

Re: WVU & Open Tournaments
I never said those opens were set in stone. I said those were the ones on the table at the moment, and there would likely be more. Open tournaments and who is competing at those open tournaments are always going to be in flux. Due to NCAA rules, we can't pay to enter unattached athletes or provide or arrange their travel to the tournament. I was simply waiting to hear back from those guys on if they were going or not.
Despite what you may believe there is no conspiracy to keep information from you. I've been an open book with everyone on here, but I can't stay glued to this board all day. I'm doing my best to keep everyone on here in the loop.

Kyle, I am genuinely rooting for your success. Before your arrival THIS SEASON, we had NOBODY from WVU communicating on this forum. Flynn is in season 4. You are in season 1.
Oklahoma, Big 12 opponent, will be a good in conference measuring stick to see how season #4 is going to be.

Thanks Kyle. This is the kind of information that will help people keep up with what is happening at WVU and increase the interest in those wanting to follow the team. Especially those like me that otherwise wouldn't have access. I know it takes extra time and probably is not in your job description or maybe even deemed important by those who hired you and whom you work for, but it is appreciated.
On another note, I do have a question that you or anyone else can answer. The 3 wrestlers above (Dolan/Joll/Kemp) that I have kept from your posting of everyone's results all lost just one match. How does that translate into a fifth place finish and not a third place? Just curious.

Re: WVU & Open Tournaments
Great day by Titus. Gonzales is most likely tOSU’s starting 133 this year. Kinda Surprised Lautzen is the one wrestling 133 and Titus is redshirting. Thought they both would be RSing tbh.

Re: WVU & Open Tournaments
Some guys are discussing going to this weekend's Shorty Hitchcock Memorial Open at Millersville University in Pennsylvania. I will keep you updated. However, a number of guys having wrestled a lot of matches the past two weeks and are banged up.
Re: WVU & Open Tournaments
Great question, KDunbar. So the NCAA has a rule that you can't wrestle more than six matches in a day. So, a lot of these tournaments if you lose before the semifinals, the best you can do is 5th place and the losers of the semifinals just wrestle for third place. This is to try and ensure that wrestlers don't reach their match limit and so there aren't a lot of no contests. Unfortunately, that happened with a couple of our guys at the Clarion Open.

Nice stuff. I pull for all the Mountaineers all the time. Please keep the results coming!!!

We will have guys competing this weekend at the Shorty Hitchcock Memorial Open at Millersville University in Pennsylvania. I will let you know exactly who is going as we get a closer. Brackets will be on FloArena, but I don't believe that it will be streamed anywhere.

Results from this weekend's Open tournaments. Tough weekend, but it was good to see Anthony Cicciarelli on the mat after overcoming an injury earlier this season. Michael Dolan continues to grind and it's going to be a hammer when it's all said and done.

Kyle, your reporting on the open tournaments is a great example of "ACTION" needed and required to get WVU's wrestling team headed in the right direction.
Is the declining in open tournament participation due to many wrestlers being "banged up"?

Yes, a number of guys got banged up at the Ohio Intercollegiate Open a few weeks ago and are working to get back. I think you'll see that number rise at tournaments in December.
