The West Virginia University wrestling team opened our season for the second consecutive year at the Southeast Open and it was another successful trip to Roanoke. Below are match by match results from this weekend. We had 30 wrestlers in action, 23 attached and seven unattached. 16 of those guys finished in the top six. We were led on the day by Jett Strickenberger, Jordan Titus, and Ian Bush, who brought titles back to Morgantown!
Like most Open Tournaments, if you lost before the semifinals the best you could do in the consolation bracket is 5th place. However, a few of the Open Division brackets were smaller than usual so they did full consolation brackets at 125, 197, and 285. You can check out full brackets from the weekend here: https://arena.flowrestling.org/event/a4 ... 53f150960d
Apologies for not getting our entries out ahead of time. I'll make sure to do that the rest of the year. We hope to see you in Morgantown on Sunday, November 12 as we take on Cleveland State, Duke, and Kent State. Admission is FREE!

I agree. Some guys took a few bumps, literally and figuratively, but for the most part I thought Jett, Jordan, Ty, and Caleb all had really impressive performances on the day. One other guy that really caught my eye was Mason Mills, this little dude was really good. It's a shame he had to forfeit out of his last match because I think that was a match he was going to win. Lets hope him and Brodey Conley get healed up and get back to it real soon.

Dennis Robin also had a great weekend taking out Hopkins and Lehman who were both ranked wrestlers before losing respectably to top 5 Munoz. Big step for him. Payton overcommitted on a roll through reversal thing and got caught twice for nearfall. Seems like that happened last year too so maybe the competition is exploiting a know vulnerability that hopefully he can make an adjustment for? He was up like 5-1 I think before that. I'm not an expert so probably wrong on that.
I was super impressed with Watters, the kid's the real deal right away it seems. Henson also showed why he is top 5 and I think he contends for a title this year. What a crazy pace he sets.
I think WVU will surprise some teams in duals this year as we are pretty solid top to bottom. Not so sure on tournaments, maybe some of our guys will crack top 10 by then end of the season and make some noise in tournaments but hard to see it right now.
Re: Southeast Open Results
Pretty descent start. Would of been nice to see Dowling win. Titus and Waters did well. Hall losing is obviously the biggest disappointment. Conley and Cooley pretty meh. Robin wrestled great. 133 is still a graveyard unfortunately.
If Hall wins and Conley/Cooley do a little better than I think they would be extremely happy with this performance.

Conely was wrestling good until he got conked in the head and had to forfeit out due to concussion protocol. It would have been nice to see him get more matches.
Dowling wrestled really good, he just took a bad shot against a really good wrestler and gave an easy takedown with about 30 seconds to go in OT. The first 8 1/2 minutes of the match was pretty good. I would have liked to have seen him wrestle Keller from Ohio, though.
I thought Robin wrestled good. He had a couple of good wins over quality guys, but he does not put his foot on the gas to create a large point separation. Seems like he gets a lead and kind of slows down just trying to maintain the lead and not expanding on it. Overall, he did wrestle well.
And you are right about Cooley, "pretty meh", I would throw Wolfgram in that category as well.
