Re: The best 4 time state champions
Giving up zero points in 16 state tournament matches is pretty amazing. I have to think that Cottrell is the only one to have that record?

Also, I don't see an option to purchase student tickets online, even though they're supposed to be a different price. Does that mean you have to buy student tickets at the venue? I wish I knew what to tell you. Although you shouldn't have to do this, I think your best bet would be to check with the...

Re: Wolfram and Amos
As for the extra weight class, I just got back from the NCWA (Club) National Championship, and they have an extra weight class of 235 lbs. Personally, I think it is a positive, you don't have people that are naturally 235ish pounds either giving up 50 pounds to the big boys that are cutting down to ...

Logan "redshirted" a year when he started college at Marshall. Then he figured out how much he missed wrestling, and transferred and wrestled for three years at WVUTech as an undergrad. After he graduated he went to Liberty U. for grad school to get his master's degree. He had one year of ...

Coaches are friends for life
West Virginia Tech had a dual last night with SWVa college. Duals at that level of college have a very small turnout of fans. A few local parents, maybe a few girlfriends/roommates/friends of the wrestlers, and team mates that aren't wrestling for some reason. Also, these small schools get hit hard ...

Re: Regional Review
Another thing to consider in this debate...is if a kid gets hit in the head and meets "concussion protocol" or whatever they call it, they could not compete in the state tournament without the extra week. A few years ago, I saw a kid who was winning fairly easily in the regional finals get...

Re: What’s your take on the off week?
My son graduated 3 years ago, so I have no dog in the hunt anymore, but I don't think 2 weeks between is the worst idea with the ever increasing emphasis on "concussion like symptoms" and the mandatory minimum of 7 days off. As to the refs...I have a question...am I confused about the rule...

Re: Participation trophies @ WV AAA Wrestling championships!
First, both COY and MOW are voted on by fellow coaches, correct? Not sure who you're blaming here....
Second...MOW is "Most Outstanding Wrestler" of the state tournament, not the best wrestler in the state. That's a different award that comes later.

No one else uses more than one? In the ncaa they only have one camera angle for replays?
Again, what about other sports? I know this is a wrestling board, but I doubt the ssac (or anyone unbiased) would promote it in wrestling only.

Re: Video Challenge
So, are you going to push for the same in football? Basketball? Tennis? Etc? Only in the states? What about the regionals? Whose video camera do you use? State provided cameras? How much would we have to pay per session then? Because I'm sure $8 times 5 sessions wouldn't cover it. You would probably...

About 50% of the coaches at the middle school coal field tournament are wearing ball caps. I haven't seen any fedoras or Stetsons though.

Re: Top 29
Is wrestling any different from tennis? Golf? Cross country? etc.? I'm sure there are a few "JV" golfers, etc. out there that are better than some of the varsity kids on other teams. Does it suck for the jv kid? Maybe, but it's not exclusive to wrestling. And while I agree that tennis play...

Re: Question #1
It depends on the sport. In football, at least at schools I'm aware of, everyone dresses for varsity games, so if your team wins a state title, you're on the field and part of the victory. In other sports, like basketball, volleyball, etc., the ssac limits how many you can have on the bench, so at l...

Re: EF vs EF
There was at least one, maybe 2 weight classes with 2 kids from the same school in the finals, and a couple more in the 3rd and 5th place matches. They all seemed to be trying to me...at least there wasn't anyone that laid down on their back and let the "varsity" kid put a foot on them and...

Re: EF vs EF
In every sport, kids that are JV are JV because they aren't as good as the varsity kids. Actually, that probably isn't always true. IMHO, wrestling is better than other sports. Let's use basketball as an example...maybe there is a JV kid that is better than the varsity kid, but he's a freshman and t...

Re: Question #3
Actually, some do, see my response to "question 1". Some of the bigger schools' JV teams (Woodrow is the example I used there) do in fact compete with varsity teams (usually A or AA, but probably not always), and they also get into some of the same tournaments as varsity teams (maybe even ...

Re: Question #1
JV players dress for varsity football games (at least everywhere I'm familiar with) and in a lot of cases actually play in varsity games, obviously, due to injuries, lopsided scores, the varsity player not performing well, matchups, etc. If the kid gives a good showing, he may get more varsity time,...

Greenbrier west beat Wirt, sorry don’t know the score.

I won't name the coach, but where my son Logan wrestled his HS freshman year before we moved, the football coach tried very hard to talk football players into lifting through the winter instead of wrestling. A big difference from where we moved to, where the wrestling coaches are also football coach...

Re: Stalling rules?
I've never really understood why not "shooting" is considered stalling, since it possible to be aggressive and get takedowns without taking a "shot". You will see kids take multiple "poor" shots like a machine gun, and obviously the other wrestler has to sprawl, and the...
