Re: I may ruffle a few feathers
It would be interesting to have the State in Wheeling, but I suspect that Chris is right...they may not have anybody to run it. I have worked a table at OVAC for 10 years now and it is down to a science. The guy in charge of the table crews--Rich McCardle--does really well in getting the right group...

Okay...confirmed with an underwriter, BRIM or whosever the driver's insurance is will have to prove they are taking money to do the transport, it's not ridesharing. Some companies can be goofy, so I'd advise the drivers/policyholders to confirm there aren't any strange restrictions/exclusions per th...

One thing you may want to consider doing in the one-in-a-million chance something would happen for those parents who drive with the kids in the cars...have them check their own coverage to see if this is permitted. I work in insurance and there can be funky rules when it comes to what may be conside...

Congratulations, Braxton! My son and I made it a point to stick around for Braxton's state title match back in February (we had come to cheer on Anthony Carman)...he's unreal. No matter what his choice was, he was going to be successful. I'm with Mr. Amos and Chris...there is simply no need to ridic...

Re: Braxton Amos wins 3rd high school Super 32 belt
Kid clearly is not human. Some sort of cyborg, perhaps? Tons of Columbus, OH, wrestling fans were quite disappointed when he announced his college of choice...so many (including myself) were convinced he was Ohio State bound. At any rate, I don't even think the sky will be a limiter on Mr. Amos. I'm...

Having been appointed to USAFA class of 2000, I can attest that it is quite a difficult feat to be appointed. Having also dislocated my shoulder in a BCT wrestling match...he will get to test his mettle (okay, okay, I was a mediocre wrestler, but the guys who were in wrestling were typically state c...

Joining the chorus here. Apart from my freshman season at Moundsville in 1993, I was always a JV guy. You'd never know it by how Coach Zervos treated us, frequently he was my full speed partner during my senior year, his first as a coach at JM. Wonderful friend, wonderful coach.

Re: Pinning Through
You're kidding right? I wouldn't really say the toughest high school kid, since the Ironman has some really tough guys, but Amos has had Wood the last two years in the finals at OVAC and has not pinned him. Won decisively, yes, but no falls. Last year, Wood seemed to simply work to never get turned...

Re: Pinning Through
If Braxton has it as a goal to pin through in the least amount of time I would as the old saying goes "bet the farm on it" Dylan Woods (presuming he ends up in the finals) may have a lot to say about that. He is tough as nails and is one of the stoutest opponents Braxton has faced the pas...

Great turnout      Why taunt people? Whats wrong with running an 8-man bracket on a Saturday and being done with it? I am not familiar with the Ohio teams. East Fairmont is bringing JV and Varsity (available weigh ins) also based on what I was told. There will end up being ...

Re: Tournament Operations - General
I'm sure that it can...frankly, the OVAC will often save marquee matchups to last during the finals. Probably as long as you run all the weights together--so they can have the 1 hour rest normalized--you could start any weight you wanted. That's probably the only concern; when I get our bout sheets ...

Didn't know that about TC. Monroe was never big, but I seem to remember that they had some decent kids. I know Bishop Moved on a while ago, but they had a ton of good kids--Andy Smith and Josh Giovengo come immediately to mind--over the years. the Ceebees weren't big, but they had just joined. Proba...

I applaud these people for choosing to talk about such unfavorable and unpopular topics. When the middle school wrestlers first hit the mats at the WSAZ to warm up, ...

Re: The evolution and continual degradation of WV Wrestling
JW, you're on to something. When it comes to wrestling, I wonder how many give up because it is not immediately rewarding? For example, I stuck with it even when I lost more than I won early on. I can recall former teammates who dominated in junior high, then struggled in high school, and quit. I ha...

Re: HS wrestling in WV 2019
One other thing I noticed this weekend--there were several schools that have typically fielded teams at the OVAC that did not come this year. Monroe Central, Clay-Batelle, Tyler Consolidated are the ones that come immediately to mind, and it is tough to see some previous powers not do tremendously w...

Re: HS wrestling in WV 2019
Not only this, guys that have been quite good seem to be quitting. I know of one who decided to make a major push for a D1 football scholarship (or so I'm told) and others that are worried about getting hurt. What I have noticed is that, at least in tournaments I go to, the top end is very, very goo...

Re: OVAC "Ron Mauck" Wrestling Championships
Had I really looked at the brackets, I wouldn't have been so solid on a PSHS win. I will say that they actually gave out some of the awards early due to the oncoming snowstorm. I was grateful, too, as I had mat 1 all weekend (and 5th place Saturday night) and had to make it back to Columbus (it was ...

Yeah, they'll win it going away. Beaver is tough this year as is Steubenville, but I don't think South loses..perhaps not as huge of a margin as last year, but a comfortable win.

Thoughts? Always my favorite tournament to attend. I have always thought it is incredibly well run and enjoy my interactions with officials and coaches there. The upside of working a mat is that you're very close to the action. The downside is that you're limited to basically only seeing that action...

I agree with my cousin Truesouthfaninhunt; South will win, but I think it will be a little closer. I met his nephew (Wade Smith) at the South Classic. From what I found on here, he is 17-1 with 11 pins. That's the best record on the JV team. He should be a placer at next years State Tournament. Yea...

Sean, when will the OVAC seeds be out? I could be wrong, but I think they do the seeding this coming weekend...as I recall, that's when it's normally done. What's weird is that they now seed up to 12 guys, though the tournament places 8...my HS coach told me it has to do with some coaches pulling g...

Re: State champions
1982, Ted Zervos of John Marshall placed 4th in his region. He won the state title a week later. The next two seasons, 1983 and 1984, the regions were changed and only the top THREE were taken to the state tournament. This change never made sense when a regional 4th placer just won the state title ...

Thanks greencrush while the pendulum swings that way now, a coupe years ago there were a lot of coal country folks firm believers that they could handle the AAA champion in either dual or tournament format. I like the single class in wrestling, then you have a true Highschool state champion who has...

Re: AAA teams droping to AA
It would seem that the best way to "ignore" the enrollment is to have a simple "the largest enrollment of X number of schools shall be AAA," but then you'd have to find a way to make it not change every other year. Perhaps a rolling 10 to 15 year average? I don't know, because as...

Re: State of AAA 106 Address
A large part of the problem is that half of the schools that were AAA give years ago are AA now. East Fairmont, Fairmont, Point Pleasant, North Marion, Bridgeport, and Winfield were all AAA within the last 5-10 seasons. One of two things need to happen, and neither is the elimination of weight clas...

Re: State of AAA 106 Address
Ouch. I remember that one of the reasons they changed the weight limits (103 becoming 106, etc) was to gain participants, that is, that the weights would distribute more evenly. This doesn't seem to be the case in WV. Do you think this is symptomatic of something different? In other words, is the pa...

He successfully executed several takedown and pinning combinations and was awarded a pin in one of the...
